Festool HW S8 D42,7/R15 KL Roundover Cutter

At a Glance: Professional carbide-tipped R15 roundover cutter with an 8 mm shank, 42.7 mm cutter diameter and interchangeable ball-bearing guidance. Use the ø12.7 mm bearing for a classic 15 mm edge radius or the smaller ø9.5 mm bearing to create a decorative round-edge profile.

The Festool HW S8 D42,7/R15 KL is a versatile professional roundover cutter designed for profiling solid wood and panel materials with a clean, consistent 15 mm radius. Its two precision carbide cutting edges provide excellent durability and smooth cutting performance, while the integrated ball-bearing guidance allows the cutter to follow straight or curved workpiece edges without requiring a separate guide fence. Festool has made this cutter particularly flexible by allowing the guide bearing to be changed: with the ø12.7 mm ball bearing it produces a conventional rounded edge, while fitting the smaller ø9.5 mm bearing changes the cutting relationship and allows a decorative round-edge or bead-style profile to be routed. The bearing is retained by a screw for quick and straightforward replacement. With its 8 mm shank, 42.7 mm cutting diameter, 22 mm cutting length and 62 mm overall length, the cutter is suitable for Festool OF 900, OF 1000, OF 1010, OF 1010 R, OF 1400, OF 2000 and OF 2200 routers.

One cutter, more than one edge profile

The guide bearing determines how deeply the cutter enters the edge of the workpiece. With the standard ø12.7 mm bearing, the HW S8 D42,7/R15 KL produces its conventional R15 rounded profile. Changing to the smaller ø9.5 mm guide bearing allows the cutter to engage farther into the workpiece, creating a more decorative round-edge profile. This makes one cutter considerably more versatile than a fixed-profile roundover bit.

Extra Information

  • What does HW mean? HW is Festool's designation for carbide cutting material. Carbide retains a sharp cutting edge for a long time and is particularly suitable for professional routing.
  • What does S8 mean? S8 indicates an 8 mm-diameter cutter shank.
  • What does D42,7 mean? D identifies the cutter diameter, which is 42.7 mm.
  • What does R15 mean? R15 identifies the 15 mm radius produced by the cutter when configured for normal rounding.
  • What does KL mean? The KL designation identifies this cutter as a ball-bearing-guided profile cutter.
  • What is NL? NL is the cutting or working length of the profile. For this cutter it is 22 mm.
  • What is GL? GL is the total overall length of the cutter, which is 62 mm.
  • Why use a ball bearing? The bearing runs directly against the workpiece edge and controls how far the cutter enters the material. This makes it possible to follow straight and curved edges without relying solely on a router fence.
  • ø12.7 mm bearing: Festool specifies the 12.7 mm guide bearing for conventional rounding of workpiece edges.
  • ø9.5 mm bearing: With the smaller guide bearing installed, Festool states that a decorative round-edge profile can be routed.
  • Why does the smaller bearing change the profile? Because its outside diameter is smaller, the cutter moves farther into the edge of the workpiece before the bearing makes contact. This exposes more of the cutter profile and creates the decorative secondary form.
Roundover versus decorative round-edge profile

With the ø12.7 mm guide bearing, the cutter removes the sharp corner and produces the clean R15 quarter-round profile normally associated with a roundover cutter. Replacing it with the smaller ø9.5 mm bearing allows more of the cutter to enter the timber, extending the profile beyond a simple quarter-round and creating a decorative bead-like edge. This ability to change the finished appearance simply by changing the bearing is one of the strongest features of this Festool cutter.

Why carbide matters on a large profile cutter

A 42.7 mm profile cutter removes significantly more material than a small edge bit. Festool uses two carbide cutting edges to maintain sharpness, clean cutting and useful service life under professional conditions. Keeping those edges clean and sharp is particularly important when routing visible furniture profiles.

Pro Tips

  • For a full R15 profile, make sure the workpiece is thick enough to accommodate the radius without producing an unwanted step or cutting into an adjoining face.
  • On demanding hardwoods or where a large amount of material must be removed, make the profile in more than one pass rather than forcing the full cut at once.
  • Route external edges against the cutter's rotation according to the router manufacturer's instructions for safe, controlled conventional routing.
  • Make a test cut on an offcut before profiling the finished component, particularly when changing between the 12.7 mm and 9.5 mm bearings.
  • Inspect the guide bearing before every job. It should rotate freely without excessive play, roughness or noise.
  • Keep resin and adhesive deposits off both the carbide edges and ball bearing. Build-up can affect finish quality and bearing rotation.
  • Do not allow the guide bearing to run over rough defects, protruding fasteners or glue lumps that could disturb the finished profile.
  • Where end grain is being routed, use light passes to reduce the chance of breakout.
  • For rectangular components, routing the end-grain edges first can allow any minor breakout at the corners to be cleaned up when the long-grain edges are subsequently routed.
  • Use effective dust extraction. Large profile cutters can produce considerable chips and fine dust.
  • If the cutter starts requiring noticeably more feed pressure or leaves burn marks, inspect the carbide edges for resin build-up or dullness.
  • Have carbide cutters professionally sharpened when necessary so the original profile geometry remains accurate.

How to Use

  • Disconnect the router from the power supply before fitting or adjusting the cutter.
  • Check that the router is suitable for the 42.7 mm cutter diameter and is fitted with the correct 8 mm collet.
  • Inspect the cutter, carbide cutting edges and guide bearing for damage or excessive wear.
  • Choose the appropriate guide bearing for the required profile.
  • Use the ø12.7 mm bearing for the standard R15 rounded edge.
  • Use the ø9.5 mm bearing when the deeper decorative round-edge profile is required.
  • Insert the 8 mm shank into the router collet to the correct depth, without clamping on the transition between the shank and cutter body.
  • Tighten the collet securely according to the router operating instructions.
  • Adjust the cutter height to suit the desired profile.
  • Make a test cut on scrap material of the same thickness and inspect the resulting shape.
  • Secure the finished workpiece firmly.
  • Connect suitable dust extraction.
  • Allow the router to reach full operating speed before bringing the cutter into contact with the workpiece.
  • Guide the router smoothly so the bearing remains in continuous contact with the workpiece edge.
  • Use several progressive passes if the full profile requires substantial material removal.
  • Allow the cutter to stop completely before placing the router down or making adjustments.
